Netflix to stream Christmas Day NFL games for three years
  + stars: | 2024-05-15 | by ( Jacob Pramuk | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +1 min
Netflix will stream Christmas Day NFL games for the next three years, in its first true step into live sports. The streaming platform will show two games on Christmas Day this year, followed by at least one matchup in both 2025 and 2026, the league announced Wednesday. It is unclear how much Netflix paid for the rights to stream the games. Now, Netflix will stream games for the most watched U.S. sports league, at a time when it is trying to boost profits by raising subscription prices, pushing users toward an ad-tier membership and cracking down on password sharing. The three Christmas Day NFL games averaged 28.68 million viewers last year, according to Sports Media Watch.

Here's what will likely be topics of discussion during Upfronts week, whether it's on stage, in the audience or in private. That dependsMedia companies just finished reporting quarterly earnings, which showed traditional TV is still lagging behind streaming and digital when it comes to ad revenue. Streaming advertising was up 22% across media companies, and now makes up 18% of total advertising. Tech companies including Snap , Roku , Google and Microsoft each saw digital advertising revenue make a comeback this past quarter. Streaming advertising revenue jumped 70%, but the overall number is much lower — just $175 million.

Now Netflix looks like it is close to a deal to stream two NFL games on Christmas Day, reports Puck's John Ourand, citing "a bevy of sources." Does that mean Netflix doesn't know how much it will pay for the games? The NFL declined to comment; Netflix didn't respond to a request for comment. If the deal does happen, it will be easy to step back and see how Netflix got there. The NFL now plans on releasing details about its upcoming schedule on May 15 — which also happens to be the day Netflix will host its "upfront" event in New York, catered to advertisers.

And while WBD's $0.40-per-share loss was 4 cents better than last year, it was still lower than analysts had hoped for. Warners added about 2 million net streaming subscribers globally in the first quarter, bringing its total to 99.6 million. There's a simple explanation for WBD's streaming ad growth despite modest subscriber additions: the advent of live sports on Max. As impressive as WBD's burgeoning streaming ad business looks now, it may be nothing more than a blip if Comcast's NBC outbids TNT for NBA media rights in the league's next TV deal. Suddenly, it seems like Zaslav is taking an even bigger risk by playing hardball with the NBA.

Discovery doesn’t “have to have the NBA.” It appears Wall Street disagrees. TNT has built a programming slate around the NBA games, most notably the highly rated ”Inside the NBA” show. Losing the rights to NBA games could throw aspects of that business partnership into question. Since WBD first began trading on Wall Street in April 2022, the stock has lost roughly 70% of its value. And for Zaslav, whose company is struggling on Wall Street, the battle could not come at a more inopportune time.

That would mark a milestone for the company, which launched Disney+ on Nov. 12, 2019. It would be the first time Disney showed it can make money from Disney+, Hulu and ESPN+. Disney will need to sustain and grow streaming profit to justify Iger's five-year-old strategy to go "all in" on the segment. Disney has already offered ESPN+, a sports streaming service that has some but not all of ESPN's content. As the second quarter begins, we're taking stock of the AI trade. Microsoft leads There's no denying Microsoft's execution, which paved the way for generative AI to go mainstream and the company to then make money from the emerging technology. Alphabet may have messed up by letting Microsoft leap ahead on generative AI, but the company has years of experience in artificial intelligence research. That alone should tell you just how big these companies are betting that generative AI will indeed be transformative — on par with smartphones or the internet itself. Apple launches its first sports app

The company on Wednesday launched Apple Sports, a free app for the iPhone that delivers real-time scores, key statistics, and live betting odds. At launch, users will have access to live data from the NBA, NHL, and MLS, among other leagues. On Wednesday, Apple will launch a new app. Apple has in recent years struck deals with various sports leagues, such as the MLB and MLS, to stream games on its Apple TV+ streaming service. While Apple Sports can alert users to where a game is being broadcast, it will not stream games directly inside the app, instead pointing users to the correct app to watch the action.

Super Bowl LVIII was the most-watched television show in history, as an estimated 123.4 million people watched the Kansas City Chiefs rally in overtime to defeat the San Francisco 49ers. CBS Sports said that figure included viewers across all platforms and was up 7% from last year's 115.1 million average viewers, which was also the previous record. This year's game was the most-streamed Super Bowl in history with a record audience on Paramount+ , the network said. It added that the network saw its best postseason viewership since 1998. Live sports has showed strength even as TV viewership has fragmented and moved to streaming platforms.

The new sports streamer that Disney, Warner Bros., and Fox announced Tuesday is a really big deal that could reshape TV . And then they charge the big pay TV distributors a ton to carry their broadcasts of those games. Which may explain why, up until Tuesday, they hadn't told any of the pay TV companies or sports leagues about their plans, industry executives tell me. But if you're the kind of person who's buying an antenna to watch sports TV, you're not going to buy this thing anyway.) ESPN parent Disney and Fox report earnings on Wednesday, and more answers could be on the way. Here are six of the biggest questions coming out of the new announcement:How much will it cost? This new streamer could be the thing that finally kills cable TV. If they believe it has promise, could it give ESPN, Fox, and WBD more bargaining power in sports-right negotiations and greater ability to shoulder the sky-high costs? Will this new streamer come to the negotiating table for more sports rights to pad out its offering?

The NCAA and ESPN have reached a new eight-year media rights deal worth more than $115 million annually, as the value of sports media rights reaches new heights. The new agreement carries an annual value of roughly three times the current 14-year deal, which pays about $40 million annually. It will include the rights to 40 NCAA championships — 21 women's and 19 men's events — as well as exclusive championship coverage of all rounds for women's basketball, women's volleyball, women's gymnastics, softball, baseball and FCS football. ESPN has benefited through its airing of the NCAA women's basketball tournament and the WNBA playoffs, among other sports.
